UTD Readies for Online and In-Person Summer Camps

A year after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of nearly all of its programs for children, The University of Texas at Dallas will offer a mix of online and in-person camps this summer. Here’s a roundup of the camps currently open for registration.

Camp Interact

This therapeutic, in-person half-day camp is for children who have finished first through fifth grades and have social challenges. Children can participate in team-building activities and drama-related exercises. Children may have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder/Asperger’s syndrome, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, nonverbal learning disorder, and/or mild language impairments. Morning sessions are from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., and afternoon sessions are from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Learn more on the camp’s webpage.

Chess Camps

The virtual camps are designed for kids ages 8 to 17, who are grouped by ability, age, experience and instructor assessment. Participants will receive a set lesson plan, game skills activities and sparring matches. Morning sessions are from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and afternoon sessions are from 1 to 3:30 p.m. More information can be found on the chess summer camp website. To sign up, visit the registration page.

Coding Camps

More than 200 online coding camps will be held for elementary, middle and high school students starting Monday, May 24. See the full list of camps, dates and registration deadlines on the coding camps website.

Mean Green Comet Debate Institute

UT Dallas and the University of North Texas will present their annual camps virtually this summer. Students will learn from some of the best strategic thinkers and educators from the high school and college debate communities. The deadline to register is Tuesday, June 22. SMART Edge Summer Camp

The SMART (Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Tactics) Edge Summer Camp for students entering sixth to 12th grades is cognitive training designed to improve brain efficiency through deeper thinking and innovation in an interactive camp setting. Dates: July 26-Aug. 6 at the Center for BrainHealth, Dallas

Youth Soccer Camp

This day camp will feature five full days of skill sessions, games and instruction for boys and girls ages 5 to 12 at the UTD Soccer Complex. Due to COVID-19, enrollment is limited, and additional safety measures will be implemented. Registration is first come, first served. Campers will be divided into age groups and will receive a camp T-shirt and soccer ball.
