Creating New Knowledge, Driving Innovation

The word research is derived from the Middle French recherche, which means “to go about seeking.”

At The University of Texas at Dallas, nearly 1,500 faculty members and 30,000 students are “seeking” knowledge every day — in the classroom, in the laboratory and out in the field. They are seeking the mechanisms that underlie diseases; they are seeking understanding of some of society’s most perplexing problems; they are seeking cures to ailments; they are seeking solutions to engineering or mathematics or astronomical puzzles; and some are seeking new questions to investigate. So why does it all matter?

Because, in the words of Neil Armstrong: “Research is creating new knowledge.” And knowledge allows each of us to go out into the world and make a difference.

As a Tier One research institution, UT Dallas is increasingly defining itself as one of the preeminent universities of innovation and entrepreneurship in the U.S.

One of the three pillars of New Dimensions: The Campaign for UT Dallas, which seeks to raise $750 million, is research, specifically supporting the recruitment and retention of even more exceptional faculty and graduate students. Investment in research programs, student training and state-of-the-art classrooms and facilities — like the joint biomedical engineering and sciences building created in partnership with UT Southwestern Medical Center — enhances the research enterprise and attracts tomorrow’s leaders. Situated near the ninth most-populous city in the U.S. — a region teeming with economic opportunity — UT Dallas can be a driving force that shapes the future of our society. Investment in entrepreneurship generates new opportunities for student and faculty success. Endowed professorships and fellowships facilitate the recruitment of top intellectual talent to the University, and funding for early-career faculty provides the runway for young scholars to pursue innovative ideas in their fields.

As a public research institution, UTD prioritizes its responsibility to participate in seeking solutions for today’s most pressing issues. Through innovation and the translation of discoveries to the marketplace, UTD scholars are making pivotal contributions to fields such as sustainable energy, clean water, health care, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and manufacturing.

It is this continual “seeking” that will allow UTD’s researchers to make a greater impact and to continue to provide creative solutions to tomorrow’s challenges.
